Owning a Tesla is more than just driving—it’s experiencing an entirely different way of getting around. Between daily commutes and road trips, there are a few features I’ve grown to depend on so much, I can’t imagine going back.
I drive both a 2026 Model Y Juniper and a 2024 Model 3 Highland at the moment, and after years of driving Teslas, here are the top 9 features I can’t live without.
1. Instant Remote Access via the Tesla App
Let’s kick things off with something I use every single day: the Tesla app. Yeah, other brands have remote apps too (shoutout to my sister’s Hyundai Ioniq 5), but Tesla’s version just works—seamlessly and consistently.
From pre-conditioning your cabin before you hop in, to scheduling charging, pushing software updates, or even unlocking your car remotely—the app is your digital key and control center. I haven’t used a key fob in years. And when I had to drive a rental? I literally left it running for an hour because I forgot cars even need to be turned off.
Pro tip: Forgot to roll up your windows? The app will notify you. And yep, you can close them with a tap on the app.
2. Hold Function at Stops
A small feature that makes a huge difference—especially in city traffic or hilly terrain. The Hold function lets you fully stop your car, then take your foot off the brake without it rolling forward or back. It’s simple, clean, and reduces leg fatigue on long drives.
3. Sentry Mode: Your 360° Bodyguard
Tesla’s Sentry Mode is like having a personal security system with you at all times. Thanks to multiple cameras all around the vehicle—front, sides, rear—you get 360° surveillance.
If anyone gets too close, Sentry Mode kicks in and starts recording to a USB drive in the glovebox. And yes, you can view the footage right from your app.
Bonus tip: We’re currently giving away Sentry Mode warning stickers with every order in April. Let the public know: you’re being watched 👀.
4. Full Self-Driving (FSD) & Autopilot Evolution
From phantom braking in early versions to navigating speed bumps today, FSD has come a long way. It’s mind-blowing how much the system has improved in just the past 6–8 years.
While it shines brightest on highways, I’ve even started using it for backroad commutes and around the neighborhood. Tesla’s FSD can now detect and slow for speed bumps, adjust to traffic patterns, and—most importantly—continually gets better thanks to software updates.
5. Over-the-Air Software Updates
Unlike traditional vehicles, your Tesla actually improves after you buy it. OTA (over-the-air) updates bring new features, fix bugs, and even improve existing functions like Sentry Mode or navigation.
I’ve had cars update multiple times in just a month and it’s always a bit exciting to see what new goodies appear. It’s like your car is evolving… like a Pokémon, but cooler.
6. Minimalist Interior and Touchscreen
If you’re into clean, clutter-free design like I am, the Tesla interior is a dream. Just a few buttons, one screen, and everything else is touch-controlled.
Even shifting into drive or reverse is automatic, thanks to Tesla’s predictive gear shifting. Don’t worry—if you’re missing tactile buttons, you can add programmable buttons from brands like Enhanced Auto.
7. Bioweapon Defense Mode (Yes, Really)
It sounds like sci-fi, but it’s very real—and very useful. Certain Tesla models come with a Bioweapon Defense Mode that purifies cabin air.
During a recent fire near Chattanooga, the air quality index (AQI) hit unsafe levels. Inside the Tesla? Clean, filtered air for me and the family. Parents and allergy sufferers, this one’s a game-changer.
8. Dog Mode
As a proud dog parent to our rescue pup Oreo, this one’s a must. Dog Mode keeps the cabin climate-controlled and displays a message on the screen letting passersby know your furry friend is safe while you run a quick errand.
No more panicked window-breaking or concerned stares—just peace of mind.
9. HomeLink Garage Opener
HomeLink lets your Tesla automatically open and close your garage as you arrive or leave—no clickers needed. While it doesn’t come standard anymore, you can add it via Tesla or install it DIY-style (we’ve got a video for that).
For me, it’s a subtle luxury I’ve come to love—and one more reason it’s hard to go back to “normal” cars.
