Wrapping your Tesla’s side mirrors can be one of the trickiest parts of a vinyl wrap project due to their complex curves and angles. However, with the right technique, patience, and tools, you can achieve a professional-looking finish. This guide will take you through the process step by step to ensure a flawless mirror wrap.

Why Wrap Your Side Mirrors?

Wrapping your side mirrors can protect the original paint, provide a sleek and customized look, and even enhance the aerodynamics of your vehicle. (Just kidding on that last one.) Whether you’re going for a glossy, satin, matte, or carbon fiber finish, a well-executed mirror wrap can make a big difference in your car’s overall appearance.

Step-by-Step Guide to Wrapping Side Mirrors

1. Prepare Your Mirrors

  • Before starting, go to your car’s control settings and disable auto-fold and auto-tilt functions.
  • Clean your car first to remove dirt, dust, and oils from the mirror surface. Any contamination can cause adhesion issues.
  • Dry the mirror completely to avoid trapping moisture under the vinyl. You can use a microfiber or a blower.
  • Clean the edges with isopropyl alcohol and a clean microfiber before starting. Wrap your microfiber in a squeegee to really get under the edges.
  • Go ahead and wipe down the entire mirror too before laying the film. This is your last step at removing any dust that has settled.

2. Interior Piece First

  • First place the inside piece. It’s pre-cut with a backing cut for easy install.

3. Using Knifeless Tape for Precision Cuts

  • Since this wrap design requires a sharp, clean separation, knifeless tape is an excellent tool.
  • Lay the knifeless tape along the intended cut lines before applying vinyl.

4. Exterior Piece Second

  • Cut a vinyl piece slightly larger than the mirror to allow room for adjustments. Our kit comes with precise measurements and a pre-cut area for easy install.
  • Align the vinyl with the mirror’s surface and anchor it along the sharp curve next to the previous piece.
  • Pull the piece out and over the mirror, eliminating any wrinkles that come up.
  • Use a squeegee to smooth out the vinyl from the center outward to prevent air bubbles.
  • Heat the vinyl slightly to help it conform to curves.
  • To work the material around tight corners, use a firm pressing motion.
  • After wrapping, pull the knifeless tape to achieve a perfect cut without using a blade.

5. Tackling Curves and Edges

  • Use a heat gun to gently warm up the vinyl, making it more flexible.
  •  Be mindful of overstretching; instead, use minimal pulls to mold the vinyl into shape.
  • Once the vinyl is fully conformed, tuck in any excess material under the mirror edges using a precision tool.

6. Finalizing the Wrap

  • Post-heat the vinyl, allowing the vinyl to fully adhere to the surface and prevent lifting.
  • Use a squeegee or your fingers to press down any remaining wrinkles or air pockets.
  • Go over the wrap and fix any misaligned sections before finalizing.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the Cleaning Step: Dirt or oils can prevent proper adhesion, leading to peeling over time.
  • Overstretching the Vinyl: Excessive stretching can weaken the material and cause distortions.
  • Neglecting Post-Heating: Without post-heating, the vinyl may lift or shrink prematurely.
