If you recently purchased a Model Y Juniper, you’ll see that Tesla no longer includes the HomeLink automatic garage opener by default. They stopped this feature around 2020. Instead, they now offer a MyQ subscription, which has stirred up mixed reactions in the Tesla community.

But good news: Instead of going to a service center to get it installed, you can install the HomeLink module yourself. In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how to retrofit the OEM HomeLink module into your Model Y Juniper.

🚗 Wait… What Is HomeLink?

HomeLink is an integrated module that allows your Tesla to automatically open and close your garage door based on proximity. Older Teslas (like my 2018 Model 3) came with this built-in—no subscription required. Since around 2020, Tesla stopped including the hardware and pivoted to MyQ, which is cloud-based and requires an ongoing subscription.

The HomeLink module is still available, but it must be purchased separately and installed either by Tesla service or DIYers like us.

🧰 What You’ll Need

  • Tesla HomeLink module (OEM recommended)

  • 10mm socket (preferably a stubby one)

  • Ratchet or stubby wrench

  • Screwdriver or trim removal tool

  • Flashlight or headlamp

  • Patience (and possibly small hands)

🔧 Step-by-Step HomeLink Installation (Model Y Juniper)

1. Put Your Tesla in Service Mode

Before working on anything, set your Tesla to Service Mode via the touchscreen. This disables some active systems and makes installation safer.

2. Remove the Front Trunk (Frunk) Trim

You’ll need access behind the frunk. Remove the upper plastic covers and clips. Most clips pop out easily with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool.

3. Access the Reservoir Area

Once the frunk tub is lifted out, look for the washer fluid reservoir. This blocks access to the bracket area where the HomeLink module will go.

  • Remove the three 10mm bolts holding the reservoir in place.

  • Carefully tip the reservoir back—no need to disconnect any hoses.

  • Tucked behind it, you’ll see the HomeLink mounting area.

💡 Pro Tip: This area is tight, and visibility is low. Use a headlamp or flashlight to help guide your tools.

4. Mount the Bracket

Mounting the HomeLink bracket is arguably the trickiest part of the job.

  • Tesla includes a short 10mm bolt, but it’s very hard to reach unless you have small hands.

  • We found success using a longer bolt to feed through the mount from the inside and connecting to a nut on the other side, making alignment much easier.

  • A stubby ratchet is crucial—there’s very little space to maneuver.

💡 Pro Tip: You can remove your front bumper for easy access to this area.

5. Install the HomeLink Module

Once the bracket is secured:

  • Plug in the HomeLink module to the cable tucked away behind the reservoir.

  • Slide the module into the bracket—it will snap into place.

  • Make sure the Tesla “T” is facing the right direction for a clean fit.

💻 Activating HomeLink in the Tesla UI

  1. Navigate to the HomeLink settings (via the car icon > Service > HomeLink).

  2. If the module was installed properly, you’ll now see an option to Run Retrofit.

  3. Tap Run, then press the brake pedal and turn on the right turn signal to initiate the gateway unlock.

  4. If the module is functional, it will pair and enable HomeLink.

🧪 Final Test

Once activated, run the HomeLink test in your Tesla settings. If everything’s installed and paired correctly, you’ll see a “Test Passed” message. Pair your garage door.

Now your garage door will open automatically as you approach—no more fiddling with apps or clickers!

✅ Final Thoughts

Installing the HomeLink module on a Model Y Juniper isn’t exactly easy—especially with limited space behind the frunk and that crash bar in the way—but it is doable with the right tools and a bit of patience.

Why go through the hassle? Because HomeLink works offline, is faster, and eliminates the need for a subscription. Plus, it’s a cleaner, OEM-integrated solution.
