If you’re not a fan of the dashboard trim on your 2024 or newer Tesla Model 3, you’re not alone—and the good news is, you can remove it and customize it however you want.
Whether you’re thinking about wrapping it, reupholstering, or just exploring what’s possible, we’ll show you exactly how to take it off safely and what to expect underneath.
Why You Might Want to Remove the Dashboard Trim
Tesla’s newer Model 3s come with a fabric-covered dashboard trim. While it’s minimal and clean, it’s not everyone’s style. Plus, it’s not vinyl-wrap-friendly, so if you’re looking to customize it with color or texture, your best bet is to remove and replace or recover it.
Here are a few reasons you might want to take it off:
-
Replace the fabric with something sleeker like leather or suede
-
Apply a different fabric or color
-
Experiment with new materials or modifications
-
Just curious what’s under there!
Tools You’ll Need
The easiest way to remove the dash trim? An air pump wedge. You can grab one at most hardware stores or online. It helps create space without prying too aggressively and minimizes the risk of breaking clips or damaging trim.
Step-by-Step: How to Remove the Dash Trim
-
Start on the passenger side:
Slide the air wedge into a small opening near the edge of the trim and gently inflate it to lift the trim. -
Work your way across:
Once you get a section started, you can use your hands to carefully pop the trim loose across the dashboard. -
Understand the clip system:
The dash trim is held in by around 17 metal clips that snap into place on the dashboard. They’re designed to stay secure in the event of a crash, so they hold tight—but once you’ve released a few, the rest comes out smoothly. -
Inspect for damage:
Check that none of the clips are bent or damaged. If a clip came out of place, gently realign it before reinstalling.
What’s Under the Fabric?
Once removed, you’ll see the inner structure of the trim. It’s typically a molded plastic base (likely ABS) with fabric glued on top using high-strength adhesive. The fabric is wrapped tightly with clean seams and corners—but if you try to peel it off, you’ll find that glue is stubborn. It hardens significantly, making removal a challenge.
Note: If your goal is to wrap it in vinyl or another material, it’s best to remove the fabric entirely and start fresh on the plastic base—if you’re up for the work.
Reinstalling the Trim
When you’re ready to put it back:
-
Align the trim with the clips.
-
Start from one side and press firmly along the length until you hear/feel the clips snap into place.
-
Make sure the trim is flush and secure—there should be no raised areas or squeaks.
-
Once everything clicks back, it should feel solid.
Customize with Confidence
Removing the dashboard trim gives you more freedom to personalize your Model 3 interior. Whether you’re going for a luxury vibe or a DIY experiment, it’s a simple mod with a big visual impact.
