Tesla Warranty
All Teslas come with:
Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty – This lasts 4 years or 50,000 miles – whichever comes first. This warranty covers almost everything. It does not include wear and tear damages that occur from normal use such as tire replacement, air filter replacement, windshield wiper replacement, seat damage from wear, brake pad replacement, windshield cracks due to impact damage. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself if the issue is because of a Tesla manufacturing defect (sensors going out, leaks, cameras not working) or if it’s from your own usage.
Supplemental Restraint System Limited Warranty – This lasts 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, and covers seat belts and air bags.
Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty – This lasts 8 years or 100,000-150,000 miles depending on the vehicle model. Also, your battery capacity has to be lower than 70% to get your battery replaced. Some Model S and X vehicles delivered before February 2020 with battery packs rated at 70 kWh or higher have an unlimited mileage warranty condition on the battery.
Is there an extended or lifetime warranty?
In March 2023, Tesla announced a new Extended Service Agreement to extend certain warranty coverage (on Model 3, S, X, Y) by up to 2 years or 25,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Check this out for full details and to see if you are eligible. This doesn’t include the the battery and drive unit limited warranty.
You have to act fast on this. Once your vehicle’s Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty expires, your vehicle is not eligible anymore for this extended coverage.
There is no lifetime warranty on Teslas with the exception of Model X and Model S vehicles delivered before February 2020 with battery packs rated at 70 kWh or higher that have an unlimited mileage warranty condition on the battery.
If you aren’t eligible for Tesla’s ESA, there are some third party companies that you can get an extended warranty through. I recommend XCare if you’re interested.
Used Tesla Warranty
If you bought a used Tesla, your vehicle is covered by the remainder of the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty. After that expires, the Used Vehicle Limited Warranty provides additional coverage of 1 year or 10,000 miles. Check out the series below for more on buying used Teslas.
Routine Maintenance
We recommend a routine service every 2 years or 25k miles. This will help catch things before they become problems. You don’t have to go to Tesla to do this. There are plenty of shops nowadays that can service Teslas. I would call around your area to see who specializes in Teslas. Or you can always do your own maintenance check.
Regular wheel alignment, rotation, and changes are important for Teslas as they go through tires pretty quickly depending on how much you drive. This is because of how heavy Teslas are. They are prone to wearing on the inner edges especially. Make sure they retain the correct PSI too. This will drastically reduce suspension issues if your tires are well maintained.
Regular air filter replacement is important for Teslas to make sure you’re getting the best cabin air. If your car smells like dirty socks, it’s probably time for that to be replaced. We sell a full kit for cabin air filter cleaning and replacement.
