The refreshed Tesla Model Y, commonly referred to as the “Juniper,” comes with a tow package included in all Launch Edition models. If you’re considering towing with your Model Y, here’s everything you need to know about the tow hitch specifications, installation, and how it affects performance.
Tesla Model Y Tow Package Details
When ordering a Model Y, Tesla lists the tow package option with the description: “Tow up to 3,500 lbs with a class II steel tow bar.” This means the vehicle is capable of pulling a variety of trailers, from small utility trailers to lightweight campers.
If you’re shopping for the Model Y tow package separately on Tesla’s website, it is priced at $1,300 and includes:
- 1x High-strength steel tow bar with a 2″ hitch receiver capable of towing up to 3,500 pounds on all-wheel configurations.
- 1x Trailer harness for seamless connectivity.
- 1x Tow Mode software package that automatically adjusts vehicle settings for towing.
Compatibility and Installation
- The tow package is compatible with all Model Y vehicles.
- Ball mounts are not included, as they depend on the type of trailer you plan to tow.
- Installation and shipping to a Tesla Service Center are included in the purchase price.
Accessory Carrying Capacity
For those using the tow hitch for bike racks or cargo carriers, the 2 x 2 inch (5 x 5 cm) square hitch receiver is designed to support vertical loads of up to 160 pounds.
Hitch Receiver and Trailer Wiring
- The hitch receiver supports a ball mount length of up to 8.5 inches (22 cm) and a raise of up to 0.75 inches (2 cm).
- To power trailer lighting, the Model Y features a built-in 7-pin standard wiring connector near the hitch. This supports most trailers, but adapters for other connectors can be purchased separately.
- Plugging the trailer wiring into the Model Y’s electrical connector automatically engages Trailer Mode.
Trailer Mode: What You Need to Know
When towing, Trailer Mode must always be active. It modifies the following vehicle features:
- Traffic-Aware Cruise Control increases the following distance from the vehicle in front.
- Side collision warnings remain active, but automatic steering interventions are disabled.
- Automatic Emergency Braking may have limited braking force, increasing stopping distance.
- Some Autopilot features (such as Autopark and Autosteer) and rear parking sensors may be disabled when Trailer Mode is on.
Does Towing Affect Range?
Yes. Towing a trailer increases vehicle weight and aerodynamic drag, which decreases driving range. While Tesla’s Trip Planner adjusts range estimates when Trailer Mode is active, actual energy consumption may vary. Drivers should plan charging stops accordingly when towing.
Removing the Tow Hitch Cover: Juniper vs. Legacy Model Y
One of the differences between the 2026 Model Y Juniper and previous Model Y versions (2020-2025) is how you remove the tow hitch cover. Here’s a quick guide on how they compare:
Removing the Tow Hitch Cover on the 2026 Model Y Juniper
- The cover uses a locking mechanism similar to the Model X.
- To remove it, use a flat-head screwdriver or trim tool and rotate the clips.
- Once the clips are horizontal, the cover pops out easily.
- The hitch cover locks back in by aligning it in the groove and snapping it back into place.
Removing the Tow Hitch Cover on the 2020-2025 Model Y (Legacy Model)
- The previous generation uses multiple clips to secure the cover.
- The cover can be difficult to remove without a special removal tool (which is sold separately).
- Unlike the Juniper, which has a flat-head rotation mechanism, the previous version requires precise alignment and force to snap back into place.
Stealth Hitch vs. Tesla’s Factory Hitch
In previous Model Y versions, some owners opted for aftermarket Stealth Hitches, which do not integrate with Tesla’s software. These hitches lack Trailer Mode, meaning they don’t disable parking sensors or adjust driving settings for towing. With the Juniper, the factory tow hitch includes Trailer Mode at no extra cost for launch edition vehicles, making it a more seamless option.
Installing an Aftermarket Hitch?
We previously installed an aftermarket hitch on our Model Y and documented the process in a video. If you’re considering an aftermarket option, check out our installation video for insights!
The Model Y Juniper tow package makes it easy to haul gear, bikes, or trailers while maintaining Tesla’s signature performance. Whether you’re towing for adventure or daily needs, the included tow package ensures you’re ready for the road ahead!
