Taking delivery of your brand-new Tesla Model Y Standard is an exciting milestone — but before you drive off, it’s worth slowing down to double-check a few details. Even though Tesla’s quality has improved dramatically over the years, every new owner should run through a simple delivery checklist to make sure their car is in perfect condition. Here’s a practical walkthrough based on our own delivery experience.

Exterior Inspection

Start by confirming the basics:

  • Make sure your VIN matches the one in your Tesla app and paperwork.

  • Double-check your color and configuration — mistakes are rare, but worth verifying.

  • Confirm your software version is up to date. If it’s not, ask the delivery team to update it for you.

Once that’s done, move around the vehicle and look for paint and body issues.
Use your fingernail to lightly run over any visible scratches — if it catches, that’s a deep scratch and may need attention before accepting delivery. Notify your Tesla delivery advisor immediately if you spot anything significant.

Next, inspect your wheels and tires:

  • Check for scratches or curb rash on the rims.

  • Verify valve stems are present and straight.

  • Ensure tire pressures are consistent — typically around 42 PSI, with no major variation between tires.

Checking Panel Gaps and Alignment

Tesla’s build quality has improved a lot since 2018, but panel gaps can still vary slightly. Focus on consistency — panels should be evenly aligned and doors should open and close smoothly without sticking or slamming.

Pay extra attention to:

  • Frunk and trunk alignment — make sure the gaps are even and the panels don’t sag (especially the front hood; it should be flush to prevent water pooling).

  • Doors — each should close firmly but not require extra force. If a door feels stiff or misaligned, the service team can adjust it on the spot.

  • Lights and glass — look for cracks, chips, or condensation inside the lenses.

Also confirm your badges match your configuration. The Standard trim doesn’t include “Dual Motor” or “Performance” badges, so a clean rear panel is normal.

Interior Inspection

Once inside, check both of your key cards — make sure they’re paired correctly and can lock/unlock the car. Even if you primarily use your phone as a key, these cards are essential backups.

Go through each interior detail:

  • Inspect all surfaces and upholstery for scuffs, stains, or tears.

  • Test every window, seat, and control for smooth operation.

  • Verify that the AC, windshield wipers, and turn signals function properly.

  • Confirm the touchscreen responsiveness — it should react instantly to taps and swipes.

For the Model Y Standard, note that side mirrors fold manually, unlike the automatic folding mirrors on the Premium trim. That’s expected behavior, not a defect.

Functional & Electronic Systems

Before leaving, check these crucial systems:

  • Charging port — ensure it opens and closes flush and connects properly to the charger.

  • Cameras — front, rear, and side repeater cameras should display clear, unobstructed views on the screen.

  • Emergency door releases — test that each one works smoothly.

  • Wireless phone charger — confirm your phone charges properly when placed on the pad.

If possible, connect your phone to Bluetooth to ensure it pairs correctly, and verify that navigation and voice commands are responsive.

Final Checks Before Driving Off

When you’ve covered everything on your checklist:

  • Walk around the car one last time for peace of mind.

  • Make sure your delivery paperwork matches your VIN and configuration.

  • Confirm that charging is functional (Tesla usually delivers at around 90–100% charge).

Tesla will fix most small issues under warranty, but catching them before leaving the lot saves time and hassle.
