Why do I have a blue snowflake icon next to my battery percentage? ❄️
When the battery is too cold, a blue snowflake icon appears on your touchscreen. Regenerative braking, acceleration, and charging rates will be limited. When it’s warm, the icon goes away. This is why preconditioning is so helpful, so you can avoid that entirely. We’ll talk more about preconditioning below.
1. Tire Maintenance
- Check Tire Tread: Ensure tires have adequate tread depth (at least 5/32”) to handle snowy or icy conditions.
- Switch to Winter Tires: Consider investing in winter tires if you live in an area with heavy snowfall or ice. Tesla recommends specialized winter tires for optimal grip.
- Monitor Tire Pressure: Cold temperatures cause tire pressure to drop. Keep an eye on it using Tesla’s tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and inflate as needed.
- Pack Snow Chains (if needed): For regions with severe snow, Tesla-approved snow chains can offer extra traction.
2. Wiper Blades & Fluid
- Install Winter Wiper Blades: Swap your standard wiper blades for winter-grade blades to handle ice and snow.
- Use Cold Weather Windshield Washer Fluid: Ensure your washer fluid is rated for sub-zero temperatures to avoid freezing on your windshield.
- Pro tip: If you expect snow or ice to build up when parked, touch Controls > Service > Wiper Service Mode. This raises the wipers against the windshield so they can defrost when the windshield defrosts.
3. Snow & Ice Management
- Prepare Door Seals and handles: Cold weather can cause Tesla’s door handles and seals to freeze. Use a rubber seal protectant on the door seals and handles to prevent freezing.
- Keep a De-icer: Carry de-icing spray to free frozen handles or windows if needed.
- Use the Defrost Feature: Use the Tesla app to remotely activate the defrost setting to melt snow and ice on your windshield and mirrors. Schedule this in your app so your tesla is ready when you leave.
- If ice buildup is expected when parking, turn off Auto-Fold Mirrors. Touch Controls > Auto-Fold. Ice can prevent exterior side mirrors from folding or unfolding.
- In severe winter conditions, ice buildup within the door handle can prevent the door handle from opening. Gently bump around it to break up the ice.
4. Charging Solutions
- Home Charging: If you charge outdoors, ensure the charging cable is free of snow and ice. Use a dry cloth to wipe down the connector.
- Mobile Charging Kit: Carry a mobile charging cable and adapters for unexpected charging stops, especially during road trips in inclement weather.
5. Emergency & Snow Gear
- Ice Scraper & Snow Brush: Keep these tools handy for quick snow and ice removal.
- Portable Shovel: If you drive in heavy snow areas, a collapsible shovel can help if you get snowed in.
- Cold Weather Gear: Carry extra blankets, gloves, first aid kit, a flashlight, and non-perishable snacks in case of emergencies.
6. Battery & Range Optimization
Cold weather can reduce your battery’s range. To mitigate this:
- In cold weather, changing the drive mode to chill allows the car to heat up faster and limits quick acceleration
- Precondition Your Tesla: Using the Tesla app to remotely activate the defrost setting not only melts the snow and ice on your car, but heats the battery and cabin before driving too.
- Use Scheduled Charging: Set your Tesla to finish charging just before departure, keeping the battery warm.
- Use Sentry Mode Wisely: Cold weather can drain your battery faster. Consider adjusting Sentry Mode or climate control settings to preserve range.
- HVAC is pulled from the high voltage battery pack.
- Optimize Cabin Heating: Set the cabin temperature lower while using heated seats and steering wheel to conserve energy.
- Vents: Turn your vents toward the windows to help defrost or defog them.
BONUS:
Protect the Exterior with Paint Protection Film (PPF)
Winter roads bring salt, debris, and grime, which can impact your Tesla’s paint. Protecting your car with a durable Paint Protection Film (PPF) or a vinyl wrap can prevent chips, scratches, and corrosion.
- DIY PPF kits: Our kits are designed for easy at-home installation and add a layer of protection against winter hazards.
- Focus on high-impact areas: Cover your front bumper, hood, and lower panels where salt and grit hit hardest.
